We are setting up a rustic forge. No electricity. We have plenty of oak, madrone and pine.
We have pine resina which burns very hot... could we use that to power the forge? Or should we make charcoal?

Any advice? What is your ideal setup which doesn't use electricity or propane?

We want to make knives and swords.

  • Although wood can be used, there are chemical problems with that choice: wood is wet, contains a lot of sulfur and nitrogen, and does not burn cleanly. Charcoal is not greatly effected by these problems and is easy to make from wood.

If you want to make knives, swords and other tools stay with charcoal or coke or hard coal (I forget the proper name for the stuff) or gas.
  • How far along are you in the construction? Have you setup a forge before?
If I were setting up a rustic forge I'd try to have a double action bellow of some sort.
Use the oak around for your charcoal, I have found good results with oak. Coal works well, but can get costly unless it's around you as well.
