I have disassembled my forge for maintenance, and after reassembly I had a gas leak. I heard that could be I need a high temperature tape. I've looked all over the internet for such a thing, but can't find anything for situations rated higher than 500 F. Does it exist?

I purchased new mig tips(they are the jets) and I think I'll just wirebrush all the the threads and start over with regular gas pipe threading tape.

Hello all,

I just stumbled onto this tribe and have a question to post. I was on my way to an old haunt (www.iforgeiron.com, a great spin-off from www.anvilfire.com) but since I have been spending a fair amount of time on tribe as of late……
I am a really inexperience smith. After using a home built gasser for a while I moved to a place where coal was an option and I’ve now got about half a dozen fires in my coalforge.
Enough background, now for the question. I am looking at building a Smith’n Magician type tool. I am not sure if this is original, if I saw it somewhere and forgot where, or if it is the product of a nasty head injury.
My idea is to use a section of leaf spring from one of several I have available.
First I flat it to straight, then make a 90 leaving a leg about 5 inches. Give it another 10-12 inches then another 90. (think big sideways ‘J’ at this point.) Now I go about 18 inches and add the final 90 (down) leaving the third side about 6 inches long. Completely lost yet?
The idea is something like the graphic in my album.
At this point I plan to normalize the whole thing (air quench) and drill the 4 bolt holes.
I’m good up to this point. What I am wondering is how to harden and temper this thing. I’m thinking an oil quench but I’m not sure. The whole piece adds to the flex but mostly from the 90 closest to the stump. How should I temper that bend and the others?
Any suggestions are appreciated. My only experience tempering is with a set of hotwork punches where the temper was lost after the first, well hotwork.

Thanks in advance
Nathan

I will soon begin planning and teaching simple forging, smithing, metalwork etc at an alternative school in Bangkok, Thailand. Yes it is very hot and we will be getting very sweaty I'm sure. I've done a little bit of work on a forge but not a lot and I'll basically be learning 'on the job' you could say. This is not really a problem (I hope!) because the plan is to experience the "grander scheme" of working with iron, including things like making charcoal and building a simple iron-age style forge before moving on to any more complicated tasks. I'm just throwing this out really on the offchance that someone may feel like helping me out with any scraps of advice or let me get in contact with questions etc. I'm keen to find a good simple (cheap - funds very limited) book with all the technical info and some ideas for projects. Any ideas on simple achievable project ideas using easily scroungable materials would be fantastic. If anyone has any old pamphlets, books or electronic info they want to donate to a good cause that would be well welcomed too. The school is the first of its kind in this part of the world, trying to lead the country's mechanistic, sit down and shut up style education system into a more creative and worthwhile experience.
Thanks for even reading this way and I would love to hear anything you've got to say.

Before you ask, the forge had been left outdoors, in all weather, so that it acquired a thick layer of rust (that froze the blower) and a lot of dirt throughout. Now that the rust and grim have been removed the blower spins freely.

For heating sheet metal for armor I made a stand to attach a propane roofers torch. I put a hood over the torch tip to contain the heat and I can raise and lower it depending on the shape and hight of the piece I am working with. I plan to use this when I start raising helms.

A quick take on how I feel about making blades.
First I do "period" style reproduction blades from the Roman Iron Age and the Viking era. I avoid alloys apart from standard carbon steels (the 10XX steels). I tried once to make a blade from steel I made in a charcoal furnace using iron powder. It was a bitch to get a good billet formed.

For pattern welded blades I start with a 3 layer billet of 1020, 1060 and 1090 forge welded. I fold and weld it 3 times then I twist it, flatten it and fold and weld 3 more times, twist, flaten, fold, weld, shape blade. The pattern is noticable but does not stand out. You have to look closely to see it. Some blades are done with 1020, 1040, 1060 pattern welded and then an edge of 1095 welded on. If it is a camp knife or something like that I will use a bar of 1090 (car leaf spring). I have some 5160 scrap, they were heavy coil springs. I made a couple small knifes from it but I don't see any better wear than with 1090 or 1095 for day to day use.

I don't make these to sell they are for me and friends I gift them to. I have never had a complaint about them not holding an edge or showing stress or breaking. I use the same process for spear heads.

I need an iron frame (can be very simple, nothing fancy, just to hold a mattress) for my bed. The bed is all wood right now, and a custom sized handmade antique made by my great grandfather for his wife. It is a little smaller than a standard double, and I want to make it into a standard double by having new side rails made for it out of iron. I think it will look great. Measurements are at the link above.

If you can do this for me, please let me know. I'm in Los Angeles, and would prefer to get it from someone local. If you know someone, please send a reference. Private message me if you can do the work or know someone good who can do it. Interested in getting bids soon. Would like to do this before the year is out....

for those who don't know, charcoal wrought iron is the form of iron used everywhere before steel was invented and before industrial methods were discovered for refining iron out of iron ore. it's what medieval suits of armor were made out of and does not rust like mild steel. it also takes shapes with much less effort on the hammering end of things. perhaps if you know of some blacksmiths who i might talk to, that would be useful too.

I thought some of you in this tribe might be interested to know about a project we (a couple blacksmith friends and myself) have undertaken.

We are restoring the last remaining span of the Zoarville Station Bridge, built in 1869. It is a bridge of some technological and historical significance, as it was built before steel technology took off in America and it is the last surviving bridge of its kind. Here is a link to the bridge's website with historical information, photographs, schematics, and other associated links:

http://www.tuscazoar.org/ZSB.htm#library

Please check it out. Note the joinery in the "Connection Details" page.

This project is being funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The bridge is already disassembled, and the pieces began arriving at the shop yesterday. Our work will entail restoring all the iron components, some of which are in bad shape. We will be straightening crooked sections, repairing cracks, filling in deep areas of corrosion, replacing all the rivets, and adding some structural steel support inside the cross and compression members.

I will be taking regular photographs as we work and posting them in the tribe's photo album if anyone requests it. Please post any questions about the project in this thread, if you have them.

Upon completion, the bridge will be reassembled and made part of a bike path.

I'm new to all this so pleas bear with me. Thanks

I found an old forge in a barn out by my in-laws farm this winter that still seems to work. Well, it still blows air when I pump the handel.

After reading some of the posts here and finding out that charcoal will work with a forge (father in-law owns a saw mill, lots of potential charcoal there!!) I figured I would give it a try this summer.

My big problem is I do not have an anvil. So I am wondering what options might be available to me as a substitute? My dad has an old piece of rail road track that I could unknowingly borrow from him for a bit, but I will need something more permanent on the cheap side until I have some experience in this.

anyone have any experience smithing with charcoal? (that's the stuff made from wood, in case you're as confused as everyone else I mention this to.)

my space for smithing is basically a big stretch of driveway in between the two houses on our property, with a fence and another house on one side and a 4-story apartment building on the other, so there's not a ton of air movement. coal is nasty, I'm thinking even ready-made coke is still an unacceptable kind of smoke, and other safety concerns aside, after getting a touch of carbon monoxide poisoning from a basic propane torch and inadequate ventilation, I'm not really excited about a propane forge either. I know charcoal isn't as efficient, but it's not like I'll be forging 40 hours a week, and the smoke shouldn't bother anyone.

for a forge, I think it'd be fun to set up my own somehow, partly for the project, and partly because it would save money that I would rather spend on a nice anvil, or bottles of Everclear for those rough days at the office, or whatever. I've been thinking about hacking up a stainless steel sink and setting it up with a vacuum cleaner fan. any idea if a stainless sink would hold up, at least for a little while? all the solid-fuel forges I've seen have been these monsters of 1/4" welded mild steel...I'm wondering how thin metal I can get away with.

I'm willing to move anywhere in the US, or beyond if nessesary. I've been talking to peole, doing my best to network, but nothing has come up so far. I would be able to start in September.

I can weld and have made use of the forge while at school in Austin, Tx. but know nothing about the operating of a forge. I took two technichal welding classes, an art metals class and a metal sculpture class. 4.0 gpa in all(though that means less than nothing in most real world situations).

I've been drawn towards metalsmithing since I was 15 living in Prague, Czech Republic, and used to spend hours sitting in Old Town Square watching the blacksmith work as he made bells, and coat hooks and a myriad of other utilitarian art for the tourists to buy.

I haven't been able to work with metal since December of 2002. There's been a lack of funds, shop space and equiptment in my life since then. I'm sure I've forgotten some things but they'd come back with practice and use.

I'm reluctant to go to a school for help because I was home schooled and have an easier time learning from people one on one. I have checked out the Crucible a bit, has anyone been there? Or rather, is their program worth what they ask? I would prefere an apprenticeship, but any help will, well, help.

If there's any information or help that could be offered, please send it my way. I'd be much obliged.
